Murrays Sports put together (and sells the parts for) this well planned Hobie catamaran propelled by an highly efficient Torqeedo electric outboard motor fed by Lifeline batteries and PowerFilm solar panels atop the bimini top.  It averaged 5.6 mph from Long Beach, CA to Catalina Island in 6.25 hours, arriving with power to spare.  Full throttle gave 10.2 mph loaded.  Also onboard, notice the unused back-pack version of the Torqeedo... so light and self-contained they couldn't resist taking it with them!
