Sailboats make the perfect electric repower projects. Motoring in a sailboat involves short term maneuvering, usually at the beginning and end of a trip and sometimes to get out of a jam. Electric propulsion fits these requirements perfectly with instant on reliability and high variable thrust for their compact size. Motoring requirements longer than about 1 to 10 hours (depending on speed and batteries) are met with a built in genset, or the more economical deck secured portable generator.
After sailing with electric propulsion, pilots usually report greater maneuvering confidence and much lower operating costs. Passengers praise the silence and lack of fuel and exhaust stench.
